Rock Dust is New in a Compost for 2015

In 2014 rock dust created a lot of excitement in the gardening community.

Viragrow took a close look at three different rock dusts in a demonstration trial in North Las Vegas. The trial was overseen by University volunteer Michael Barrett at the University of Nevada Center for Horticulture and Urban Water Conservation. We did not have the funding to conduct a full-scale research trial but we relied on gardeners who volunteer at this facility to give us their feedback.

We compared three rock dusts to vegetable raised beds that had fresh compost added.  The plots were referred to only by letter; A, B, C, D. Only Viragrow knew which plot was which. Viragrow purposely stayed out of the trial so that we would have no influence over the results.

Master Gardeners and volunteers watched the plots closely and were very interested in the performance of vegetables growing in these plots. The conclusions were pretty obvious: adding any type of rock dust improved vegetable production and performance over the addition of just compost to the raised beds.

Here are two suggestions from Viragrow to do in your home landscape or garden area this time of year.

Revitalize your "tired" garden soil. 

Fertilizers do not replace all of the minerals and nutrients removed by vegetables and fruit trees. A very popular and inexpensive method of rejuvenating these soils is by using what many people call "rock dust". Rock dust are natural mineral deposits loaded with essential and nonessential plant minerals. The chemistry of these soils is complicated and sometimes a simple soil test will not give you all of the answers.

Viragrow carries two different "rock dusts" that have the potential for improving vegetable and fruit yields. Very small amounts are all that are necessary for soil renewal. Buy it by the pound or the cubic yard!

Reduce your insect past problems this summer with this little trick. 

Insecticidal oil spray applications to the lower trunk, the trunk and major limbs of deciduous fruit trees and landscape trees will suffocate these pesky free riders. Buy an insecticidal oil now and wait for the first warm winter day without wind to go on the offensive. It is safe to make a second application just as leaves are emerging but avoid spraying when it is flowering. Kelzyme Rock Dust Now in Viragrow Composts

Viragrow has been looking at rock dusts very carefully. We evaluated three of them recently in some trials conducted in Las Vegas, Nevada. Those we screened included Azomite, Kelzyme, Zeolite and compared them against a control. Viragrow made the decision to include Kelzyme in three of its existing composts; Tomato Lady Mix, Rejuvinate Soil Mix and BF Compost. We hope our customers will appreciate this addition.
