It's okay to look at the name of a fertilizer but it is more important to look at the numbers. There are three numbers that appear somewhere on the fertilizer label. They will look something like this:  X-Y-Z

X is nitrogen and higher numbers promote the growth of leaves and stems and improve the dark green color of the plant.

Y is phosphorus and higher numbers promote the development of flowers and fruit, roots, production of seed and oil content of plants.

Z is potassium promotes overall general health and improves heat tolerance, drought tolerance and resistance to diseases.

The company called Arizona's Best has given this fertilizer the name, Starter Fertilizer. The reason for this name is because of the high phosphorus content (Y) in this fertilizer. Starter fertilizers will promote root growth because the plant is just "starting" and root growth is very important at this stage of its life.

Arizona's best starter fertilizer which promotes flowering, fruiting and root development. It is called a starter fertilizer because of its high phosphorus content and the encouragement of root growth. If you are a smart gardener, you can use this fertilizer for other things as well.

Viragrow sells Grow Bloom which is an example of a high phosphorus fertilizer that can be dissolved in water and applied  directly to the leaves as a liquid spray. This type of application poses no problem to the soil and promotes lots of flowering. We would recommend using a wetting agent like EZ Wet whenever you are applying liquids to the leaves.

But this fertilizer could also be used to increase flower production and fruit production of roses, fruit trees, and other flowering plants.

The high potassium content (Z) is always a good idea and is never a problem. Always try to find a fertilizer with moderate to high potassium (Z) content.

Continuous applications of high phosphorus fertilizers can present problems down the road but not potassium. High phosphorus fertilizers should be applied to soils only once or twice during the year or when a soil test indicates it is needed.

Or ....   unless you are spraying the foliage of plants with a high phosphorus fertilizer and not putting it on the soil. Foliar applied high phosphorus fertilizers can be applied to the plant numerous times without problems. But not to the soil.

Viragrow September Coupons and Compost without Biosolids!

Viragrow is offering two new composts to the Las Vegas area. These composts were developed because of customer requests.

Viragrow's BF Compost. (BF is biosolids-free!). This is a compost, made entirely from plants. It has NO animal manures, no biosolids and no commercial kitchen (restaurant) waste! This compost is entirely recycled "green waste". Use in place of Viragrow Compost for raised beds, vegetable gardens, planting fruit trees, etc., f you have a preference for products free of biosolids.

Viragrow Rejuvinate Compost was developed by our consultant, Bob Morris, because of questions he received about declining production in older raised beds, recent interest in "rock dusts" and work he has done with reclaiming production in depleted desert soils. Apply to soils that are getting "worn out". Rejuvinate Compost is blended to bring back vitality in older soils.

Our OMRI® Listed Compost. OMRI® Listed products undergo rigorous reviews to ensure they comply with organic standards. There are NO biosolids but it does contain composted animal manure from chickens; no other chicken by-products. EZ Green is not listed as a fertilizer because the nutrients contained in each bag cannot be guaranteed. North Carolina State University claims one ton of stockpiled chicken litter to roughly contain 36 lbs of total nitrogen, 80 lbs of phosphorus (P2O5) and 34 lbs of potassium (K2O). EZ Green is great as a topdressing for fall lawns, sidedressing vegetables or fall fertilization of trees and shrubs.
