Do You Want to Plant in Winter?

You can plant any cold hardy tree, shrub or fruit tree during the winter (except palms) but don't forget the mulch! Surface mulches provide a blanket of temperature control and preserve soil moisture so that planting during this time will be successful. It is inexpensive insurance.
Surface mulch as a blanket on the soil surface, decomposing and improving the soil

Soil temperatures need to be at least 50° F for roots to grow and establish plants. Seldom do our soils get below this temperature after the first few inches below the surface.

Make sure you add an equal amount of Viragrow compost, Viragrow planting soil mix or bagged EZ Green compost to your backfill surrounding the roots of these trees and shrubs. Unlike some others, all of our soil mixes are full of nutrients so you don't need to add any extra fertilizer to the soil at the time of planting.

Make sure the planting hole is deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. You do not need to dig deeper than this unless the soil is so hard it can not drain water freely. Dig the hole at least three times the diameter of the root system and mix our soil amendments with all of the soil before you put it back in the hole. It is always wise to have the hose running into the planting hole when you are putting back the soil around the plant roots. This helps to eliminate air pockets and helps the plant stand upright.

Nearly all plants will perform much better with 3 to 4 inches of organic surface mulch applied after planting. Use our Redwood mulch or Gorilla Hair for that exquisite finished look.

No Manure Compost

Q. Do you carry any compost without biosolids or animal manures?

A. Yes. When Viragrow first opened its doors in 2013 we carried only compost that contained biosolids in about 15% of its mix. We did this because biosolids offered us a chance to become part of the progressive recycling community which we value highly. Using biosolids in a compost not only recycles but allows us to keep the cost of our compost low. This allows us to offer the community an inexpensive way to improve desert landscape soils or poor quality.

In 2014, we began receiving requests for a compost that did not contain any biosolids. For some people animal manures were more acceptable than biosolids. We had concerns that most animal manure had contents that presented some of the same problems as biosolids; e.g., microbiological health concerns, salinity and pharmaceuticals. We did not believe that using animal waste was giving enough benefit to local consumers to justify the cost that we would have to charge to provide this type of product to our consumers.

We sourced a compost made entirely from green urban waste that was safe to use and provided no pharmaceuticals. In August, 2014, we sourced a product that was made entirely from recycled, urban green waste and was still a good enough quality to offer local consumers as an alternative product at a reasonable price. We named this product BF Compost, or Biosolids Free Compost. We maintain that biosolids was originally intended to include both human and animal waste. This definition has changed in the public eye and the word "biosolids" no longer includes animal waste.
