Q. The Garden Gourmet tomato soil I purchased is a great product so much different than what I could find from local nurseries. Is it the same as the soil amendments and compost you sell in bulk? What are the prices for your bagged products?

A. The products are the same at the time of bagging. There are some changes that occur as  the compost remains in the bag and the bulk compost is not fully finished when it is sold during peak sales season.

Most of the difference is in curing. The product should actually be a better quality product as it stays in the bag and “cures”. One could argue that the bagged compost might actually be superior but I do not have direct evidence that it is. But it is the same product when taken from bulk and put into bags. I should also add the bagged product does contain pumice, kelp meal and chicken manure which the bulk product does not.

“At this point, decomposition is taken over by mesophilic microbes through a long process of "curing" or maturation. Although the compost temperature is close to ambient during the curing phase, chemical reactions continue to occur that make the remaining organic matter more stable and suitable for use with plants.”
