What ToDo in February: Insect Control with Oils

Dormant Insect Control

2,5 gal and pint horticultural oil

Some insect pests spend the winter "hibernating" on plants near the soil, under mulch, nestled between the cracks and crevices but always near some food source. These food sources can be weeds, winter annuals, trees, shrubs, fruit trees, winter vegetables and anything else living.

Occasionally we will see them on wooden storage containers and boxes. Sanitation, or cleaning up the garden area or Orchard is an important winter activity.

So is the application of the dormant horticultural oil. Some say it is the most important spray of the year. Pick a warm day that has no wind and thoroughly cover trees, shrubs, fruit trees and perennials with a horticultural oil from "head to toe". Do this twice some time during the winter months.

Horticultural oils are extremely safe to humans, animals (not bugs!) and plants. Never apply when the plant is flowering.
