Q. I am a local caregiver that is interested in your soil products. I pride myself on offering all organic solutions to cancer and other suffering patients in the Vegas Valley. I was wondering if you had a catalog and some more detailed information on the soil mixes.
A. That is a very difficult question to answer because of the term "organic". We get questions similar to this every day at Viragrow. The simple answer is that anything which originates from animal or plant products could be considered "organic". For instance, you can pick up an apple in the grocery store and of course it is "organic"because it is an apple. Soil mixes, because they are mixed with a mineral component, sand, might not be considered organic any more.
What some people mean, "Does it contain any pesticides?" Again, we can hit a stone wall because of the terms. There are pesticides which are organic and other pesticides which are conventional or synthetic. The USDA has an organic program that requires participants to adhere to certain federal regulations when it comes to organic production. Organic production does allow the use of specific pesticides. So technically, organically grown fruits and vegetables are allowed to come in contact with pesticides.
Another hot topic when it comes to composts and soil mixes is the term biosolids. Biosolids are derived from biological human waste. Composted biosolids must go through a rigorous composting process and the end product, composted biosolids, must meet or be less than the Environmental Protection Agency's minimum levels for human pathogens and heavy metal content. Other composted animal manures are not required to do this. Other composted green waste is not required to do this.
However, there is a portion of the general public who is adamantly opposed to the use of human biosolids in compost. There are others in the general public who are opposed to its application to plants used for human or animal consumption but not opposed to its use on landscape ornamentals and turfgrass. There are still others who are not opposed to its use on anything as long as it is tightly regulated. This is why viragrow offers two types of composts; one that contains composted biosolids and one called biosolid free compost that does not. Viragrow wants to offer you options.

Are these Pink Lady apples organic? They were never sprayed with a pesticide, ever, and 15 years of production. But according to USDA they are not organic. |

Viragrow compost contains 10 to 15% of EPA's tightly controlled composted biosolids. Viragrow also offers a biosolid free compost made entirely from green waste. |
