Q. We want to plant a tree on our patio where we had a
hot tub. We need roughly 105 cubic feet to fill in with soil. The bottom of the
space is very rocky native dirt that was dug out for them to complete the wall
and then put back in and spread evenly in the bottom of the hole. It would be a
ton of work to mix in compost so I was wondering how you felt about filling it
in with top soil? Would you mix in compost to that as well? We have our hearts
set on a Silk Tree for that spot.
A. Viragrow Topsoil is going to be a better feel for you
than anything else available. It is recycled soil from turfgrass that was
removed to make way for desert landscapes. The soil is separated from the
grass, screened and that's it.
Because it was under lawns for years it has a good
organic matter content which is hard to nearly impossible to find in top soils
in this part of the world. You will not need to add anything more to this if
you are planting trees and shrubs.
You are just shy of 4 yd.³. Viragrow will not deliver
anything less than 5 yd.³ Viragrow topsoil is selling for $32 a cubic yard plus
tax plus a delivery fee of $65 in the Las Vegas area. Henderson it was a bit
more.
That's the way I would go if I were you. That topsoil
would be very good for planting any kind of tree. Viragrow is selling it as
fill to discriminating landscapers who want something better than the so-called
“reject sand”. Just remember silk trees are not terribly long lived anywhere
due to some die back issues because of wilt disease. But you should get 15
years or more from it.
