No Manure Compost

Q. Do you carry any compost without biosolids or animal manures?

A. Yes. When Viragrow first opened its doors in 2013 we carried only compost that contained biosolids in about 15% of its mix. We did this because biosolids offered us a chance to become part of the progressive recycling community which we value highly. Using biosolids in a compost not only recycles but allows us to keep the cost of our compost low. This allows us to offer the community an inexpensive way to improve desert landscape soils or poor quality.

In 2014, we began receiving requests for a compost that did not contain any biosolids. For some people animal manures were more acceptable than biosolids. We had concerns that most animal manure had contents that presented some of the same problems as biosolids; e.g., microbiological health concerns, salinity and pharmaceuticals. We did not believe that using animal waste was giving enough benefit to local consumers to justify the cost that we would have to charge to provide this type of product to our consumers.

We sourced a compost made entirely from green urban waste that was safe to use and provided no pharmaceuticals. In August, 2014, we sourced a product that was made entirely from recycled, urban green waste and was still a good enough quality to offer local consumers as an alternative product at a reasonable price. We named this product BF Compost, or Biosolids Free Compost. We maintain that biosolids was originally intended to include both human and animal waste. This definition has changed in the public eye and the word "biosolids" no longer includes animal waste.
