Vegas
Roots Community Garden (formerly Tonopah Community Garden) is a
community-based nonprofit organization in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Utilizing
over four acres of vacant property near downtown Las Vegas, Together We Can
opened Vegas Roots Community Garden, the city’s first and only urban
farm, in March 2010.
Together
We Can operates the garden, bringing together diverse community partners –
including schools, universities, corporations, non-profit organizations,
community groups, and individual residents – to engage together in the process.
The
garden grows organic produce and flowers, raises chickens and worms, educates
the community about healthy lifestyles, and helps make Las Vegas a vibrant
community.

mission is to create a caring and productive community of youth and adults from
diverse backgrounds who work together to build a sustainable food system and
eco friendly environment.
The

- Grow vegetables, fruit and flowers that are specific to our desert climate
- A portion will go to senior centers and youth at schools in the surrounding area of garden
- Start a weekly on-site farmers market by November 2012 (done – Marketplace at The Roots!)
- Families, businesses, or organizations can lease garden space to grow their own food
2.) Build Young Leaders:
- Implement
the H.E.A.R.T Youth Program, which supports young girls ages 12-18 in
developing character, leadership skills and knowledge in the areas of
urban agriculture, education, and entrepreneurship - Provide youth leadership opportunities
- Encourage
youth to ‘pay it forward’ by participating in Service Learning Projects
which enhance their learning and create a passion for change
3.) Community Connectedness:
- Implement
a “gardening on wheels” program where we plant and grow in the bed of a
pickup truck and take the garden to schools and senior centers - Provide
a location for employers, organizations, schools, youth groups and
community service workers to volunteer in and have field trips to garden - Hold
“Build a Better” programming in the garden, a series of classes that
bring community members together to “build” healthier, more passionate
lives - Build an amphitheater to host school, community and organization events and activities by December 2013
4.) Promote Healthy Bodies and Minds:
- Host an annual fitness event and fundraisers that the community can take part in, i.e. cycling, walking, jumping rope or running
- Implement a program that teaches people how to create their own community gardens
- Hold nutrition and fitness classes in the garden
- Encourage
youth to ‘pay it forward’ by participating in Service Learning Projects
which will enhance their learning and create a passion for change
