Viragrow to Sponsor Summer Pruning Class Next Saturday, May 17

Bob Morris, a consultant for Viragrow, will be teaching a class on summer pruning next Saturday, May 17, from 9 am to 11am at the UNLV's Center for Horticulture and Water Conservation outdoor classroom at 4600 Horse Drive. The class will be focused on fruit and landscape trees but can be applied to any landscape plant. Can plants be pruned during summer months? The short answer is "Yes." But the caveat is you must do it correctly if you want results that don't damage the plant.
Summer pruning helps keep plants smaller and reduces shading so that the plant is more vigorous, uses less water and increases flower and fruit formation. The class is open and free to the public and sponsored by the UNLV Center for Horticulture and Water Conservation and Viragrow.

What You Will Learn:
  • Why summer pruning important.
  • How to determine if summer pruning is needed.
  • Which landscape and fruit trees can be summer pruned.
  • Correct ways to summer prune during summer months that will not damage plants.
The class will start promptly at 9 am and include a 15 minute introduction followed by a walk around the facility to discuss and demonstrate how to summer prune. There is no fee for this class.

The Center is at the same location as the UNCE Orchard and houses the orchard at its 10 acre facility. The Center's classroom is located 200 yards east of the intersection of Horse Drive and North Decatur.
